How Are Boreholes Drilled?
Boreholes
A borehole is a hole bored into the ground to collect samples for analysis or to extract oil or water. Boreholes range from extraction of ice cores from glaciers to digging water wells.
Water wells
- A water borehole can be dug, driven or drilled. To dig a water well, the ground must be soft enough to dig and the water table shallow enough to avoid collapse of the soft walls. Soil can be hauled up by bucket supported with a tripod. Metals rings and braces are placed against the walls to prevent collapse during excavation.
Driven wells are created by pounding the top of a pipe with a weight. The configuration has three pieces. A rotary bit, or drive point, attached to the bottom of a short pipe rotates as it is pounded from above. The short pipe may have a screen over perforations, so that water can flow in when the aquifer level is reached. The short pipe’s diameter at the top is tapered, so the well pipe can fit onto it. A rod of narrower diameter, called a guide rod, fits inside the two pipes. It is weighted from above, and drops down onto the rotary bit.
Another method is to jet water through a narrow pipe into the bottom of the hole, where a wide drill bit has loosened soil to be carried back up through the wider channel on the outside of the pipe. This is called a jetted well.
A variation of the jetted well is to use a percussion bit to loosen earth, while pouring in water. When the resulting paste is too thick to allow the bit to solidly hit earth, the percussion bit is lifted out and a bailer is lowered in, to remove the liquid.
Drilling requires a drill rig, which are often mounted on trucks. Drill bits can be alternated between rotary and percussion type (to break hard rock). A rotary auger bit may be needed close to the surface to lift out soft soil.
Oil wells
- Drilling for oil occurs at depth beyond soft soil. Therefore, the technique differs from water well drilling in that the drill bit and the piping need not be in the hole at the same time to prevent closure of the well from collapse. This enables a telescopic approach to laying retaining pipes.
Percussion and rotary bits are alternated, as in drilling water wells. In the case of oil wells, the hole is begun with a bit up to a yard wide. Once the first segment of the hole is completed, the bit is pulled up, steel pipe of slightly smaller diameter is dropped in place, and cement is poured between the earth and the outside of the casing. Then a smaller bit is lowered to the bottom of the cemented pipe to drill a narrower hole. This telescoping process is repeated two to five times, resulting in a bottom hole as narrow as five inches.
The pipe that conveys rotational power and drilling fluid to the drill bit is called a drill string. Drilling fluid is pumped through the hollow of the drill string, to return back up through the space between the string and the hole’s rock wall. The fluid has numerous purposes, including carrying out debris, cooling and lubricating the drill bit, and opposing pressure of liquid seeping in from the hole’s walls. The machine that drives the drilling fluid is called a mud pump.
Ice cores
- Ice cores are long, cylindrical blocks of ice, pulled from glaciers and ice sheets, to study climatic conditions up to hundreds of thousands of years old.
Such cores are drilled in segments four to six meters long, since they are limited by the length of the pipe used to cut them out. The cutting pipe has sharp teeth at the bottom end. A motor rotates the pipe. When the pipe has burrowed 12-20 feet, fingers pop out to keep the enclosed ice core in the pipe when it is lifted up.
